Free Transcribed Saxophone Solos

Hi! Welcome to Zacworld!

It is my goal to continually search for (and list them here as I find them) freely available music education resources, including music software programs, games, free sheet music, exercises & drills, free transcribed solos, free online fingering charts, free metronomes, free tuners, and other resources for the benefit of music students, private teachers, music educators, and anybody else who might find them useful. The list on my website is of course by no means a complete one - it is merely representative of SOME of the many resources I found out there which I thought were particularly good. I am always interested in listing music games for kids, good jazz education resources, and free sheet music resources, all of which I think makes learning music easier & more accessible for everyone.

PLEASE - if you see a website with freely available musical education resources which you think should be listed here, by all means send me an email to lessons@zacworld.com so I can check it out & possibly list it.

Thanks, & have fun!

Zac

Music Instruction Software & Websites

Music Reading program by Wim Wijnen - highly recommended!

Windows only
Music Theory Basics is an EXCELLENT well-designed music education program written by Wim Wijnen, who is a music teacher and music software designer from Holland. This program contains many different modules (What is the name of the note?, Note writing, Yes or No, a rhythm trainer, a theory section, etc). Try it before you buy it!

Earplane.com - great online eartraining site!

Earplane.com
The web just keeps gettin' cooler! Here's a great ear training site created by Knut Lamvik I just found out about which includes separate tests for harmonic intervals, melodic intervals, intonation, 4 note chords, rhythms, and many others! If you register it keeps track of how you score and, if you're really good, you might just make it on the top 10 list!

Mr. Lamvik has kindly offered this site for free usage to anyone who wishes to use it. He will accept donations from those who wish to support his continuing work - Donate to Earplane.com

Music Trainers & Utilities from Ricci Adams

Music Trainers Online
My favorite music training and skill building site - what a terrific job Ricci Adams has done! VERY VERY COOL. You can either do the trainers online, or you can download the Offline Edition. Unlike some other sites I used to link to, Ricci still generously provides all the programs and content on his website free of charge. If you wish to support his work, he accepts donations.

Note Naming Programs

BeSharp Flashcard Trainer

Stand alone version
BeSharp is a simple java program which will test and time you on your ability to read notes. BeSharp's java programming was developed by one of my students (an adult computer programmer). Requires java to be enabled in your browser.

Note ID 3.0

Note ID 3.0
This Note ID program isn't nearly as user friendly as some of the others mentioned here. However, it is free, and I mention it here for those who want to learn a bit of piano along with note identification. The program plays a pitch and shows it on the grand staff, then you click the correct note on the onscreen piano or use your midi keyboard to play the note that way. It keeps track of your score and if you get the note wrong it keeps playing it until you get it right. Several configurable options, including putting the note names on the piano keys, seeing do-re-mi syllables during use, midi options, etc. For non-pianists I'd recommend sticking with B-Sharp or the Note Trainer utility at musictheory.net

Rhythm Tapping Programs

Earope For Windows
This is a GREAT rhythm tapping program. The shareware has some limitations, but is still well worth the download. If you are one of my students, PLEASE download and use it!

Music Dictionary Online

A great online music dictionary with brief definitions of the most common musical terms.

Metronomes--for free!

AN ONLINE METRONOME!
Just turn on your speakers, click this link and BOOM!!! - you have a metronome!
YGS Free Metronome
A nice freeware metronome from Yellow Gold Software. This very basic metronome has tempos from 40 to 208 and is simple to install and operate. I like how this metronome has the appropriate musical terms next to the tempo numbers, which is good for students who are learning what the terms mean as they encounter it on their sheet music. On this metronome, for example, next to 40 it says Largo, 72 Adagio, 152 Allegro, and so forth. By all means this little metronome is a good one to have on your computer when you can't be online!
Metronome - light edition (downloadable)
This is a downloadable shareware metronome that works really well. According to the documentation it will work for 30 minutes a day unless you purchase the full version (although it kept working for me past 30 minutes...but you didn't hear that from me! Shhhhh!). This metronome runs only on PC/Windows 98/Me/XP/2000/2003 systems with at least a 1.2 GHz CPU.

Midi file players

At this point, the Winjammer shareware midi player for PC is the only one I know of which plays, records, saves any new midi files you write (plus it lets you save any changes you make to pre-existing midi files), and displays music notation while playing back a midi file. It won't print (of course you could get around that by using a screen capture program - I'm not suggesting it, I'm just saying you could). I haven't yet seen a freeware program for PC that will do that much. I also don't know of any shareware or freeware programs which do this for the Mac (if you know of one please let me know so I can add it here).

Notation software

Finale Notepad is a freeware notation program for Windows or Mac -- great for writing, editing, playing back, saving and printing your own sheet music. Although I prefer Sibelius over the full version of Finale, at this point I have not yet seen a FREE notation program which does all the things the Finale Notepad program does. It is simple to use. You have to register this product by becoming an online member at the Makemusic site (it's free), but I think it's worth the trouble.
Finale Notepad

Here's one called Nightlite I found after searching the web for a Macintosh notation program. From it's description it sounds like it will let you edit, save, print and playback your own music files (and it is freeware!), but I've never tried it. If any of you in the Macworld (no relation to Zacworld) download this and try it, please let me know what you think.
NightLight for Mac

Hey look - it's a free tuner! (Windows only)

Have you ever been playing and knew that you were out of tune, but weren't sure if you were sharp or flat? Well, although this has never happened to me personally (well, okay, maybe once...or twice...or.......nevermind), this freeware tuner may be the answer to your intonation woes! I didn't have any problem getting it to work on my system. In order for it to work, you will need to have a mic plugged into your soundcard (most soundcards these days come with cheapie little mics, which work just fine for this).

SAXONTHEWEB.NET

The most vast & comprehensive saxophone discussion group I have yet seen -- for beginners to the most advanced professionals, this website has forums & discussions going on concerning just about every saxophone-related thing you can think of. If you play sax and you have questions, go there & ask it. Everyone there is friendly & you'll learn a lot even if you just read what others have written!

Newsgroups (also called discussion forums)

alt.music.education
alt.flute
alt.music.clarinet
alt.music.saxophone
rec.music.makers.saxophone
NOTE: If you click on one of these groups and you get a message saying the group doesn't exist, this means your internet service provider doesn't carry that particular group. You can still get access to the group by going to a web-based newsgroup service, such as Google Groups, located here: Google Groups
Once you get there just enter the name of the newsgroup in the search window (for example, alt.music.education) and you'll be able to read the articles that way.

Scales and technical exercises

Why should I practice scales???

I have provided the sheet music for the exercises in 2 file formats: PDF and GIF. PDF is a higher quality, clearer format which will print out at a higher resolution than the GIF format. In order to view and/or print PDF files, you will need to have the Adobe Acrobat Reader installed on your machine. You can get the latest version of the Acrobat Reader free of charge from Adobe's Homepage.

If you are unable to use the Adobe Acrobat Reader, click on the files listed under the GIF format.
